Finding Football

This is a project funded by the London Marathon Foundation - aiming to encourage minority groups to engage in more sport/exercise and to increase the use of community facilities and spaces. Our project is targeting girls in Edmonton and offering them a girls only football session once a week for two school terms - we hope that this will encourage more reluctant girls to try a new sport, enjoy increasing their fitness, support them socially and eventually they might be signposted to try other local sports classes. The project addresses barriers to sports which include financial barriers, lack of confidence, lack of awareness of what's available and concerns around safety in this area.

We chose to offer football following the successes of The Lionesses and the increasing demand for girls only football provision.

We have after school football clubs running in eight schools; two clubs running during lunch time at West Lea school ensuring the project is inclusive and open to wheelchair users; we have two community sessions open to any local girls (not just those in the school) in the early evening; one holiday session which ran over the summer; one weekend session for older teens.

As the project progresses we hope to see some matches, events and trips to watch some professional football.

The project is delivered in partnership with our ECP schools, Blanco Activities, Effective Transitions, Impact Sport and Perfecting Potential.
